Auto salvage yards buy junk vehicles, store them and offer the good parts for sale to mechanics, repair shops, body shops or private customers. When the vehicles arrive, gas tanks are drained or removed for safety reasons. Tires are removed for transfer to a rubber processing facility. Once the rest of the useable parts are removed or sold, the remaining parts are crushed flat to allow them to be stacked and transported to the scrap yard. Some salvage yards have their own car crusher but most drop heavy metal plates on top of the vehicle or use front end loaders to flatten the vehicle. Crushed cars are loaded on a flat bed truck, semi-trailer or, in some cases, onto a specially equipped railroad flatcar for transport to a scrap yard.
